I heart NYFD

What the hell? After a fun night out, I'm woken up from a peaceful sleep to the sound of...very loud pops. And very loud bangs. And lots of very bright flashes outside my window. I take a look outside and see this:

Pretty violent electrical fire in the grating in the street directly in front of my building, six stories right below my window.

NYFD (five? six trucks?) shows up right away, but it takes them an hour to put the fire out.

I wake up the next morning to about half-power - the outlet that the computer is plugged into, the fridge, and the bathroom lights (dimly) are working, nothing else. ConEd trucks parked all up and down my street. At work, I'm informed that 16 blocks in my area have lost power.

Return home from work that night to find NO power to my building (the buildings across the street, I notice, not only HAVE full power, but have in fact to my eye turned on even more lights than usual - are they gloating?). I don't even mind, really - full charge on the iPod, plenty of candles, and a huge stack on unread comics, I think my evening is set. Until I notice that my heat and my water aren't working, either. Wind up having to spend the night at Tim's house uptown (thanks, Tim!).

Power (and apparently heat) back by Friday morning, but water off-and-on all through Saturday.
