Duncan Sheik at The Concert Hall at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, Upper West Side, NYC, 5/16/07...
...with opener and accompanist Holly Brook, who I think is lovely.
(Due to the nature of the show (sit-down) and the constraints of the venue (sit-down), forgive the repetitiveness of some of these shots.)
I haven't really been keeping up with this tour, so I didn't know what to expect. What we got was a beautiful acoustic-based set with Duncan centerstage with his guitars accompanied only by Doug on drums, Holly Brook on piano and vocals, a string quartet (featuring Ben on cello), and a couple surprise guests...
...like David Poe...
...and Lauren Pritchard, who if you do not LOVE, there's something, like, wrong with you.
The format of the show gave an atmosphere that was friendly and intimate, while at the same time intense and "big" when it needed to be ("The Dawn's Request", for example).
The Concert Hall (a converted church, apparently, with pew seating) was the perfect venue for this type of show. At least, from our seats in row D. Sound was good, audience appreciative.
Set list:
1) Lover from Hell
2) Fantastic Toys and Corduroys
3) Half-Life
4) For You
5) I Wouldn't Mind
6) Star Field on Red Lines (w/ David Poe, whose guitar wasn't plugged in)
